Biography

Gary Guzio began his musical studies at the age of 8 when he started to play the trumpet in the 4th grade band program in Fair Lawn N.J. A year later he began private studies with Frank Ryerson, who was a trumpet player, song writer and arranger for the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra. Ryerson was well known as a no nonsense authoritative man who molded the young trumpet player into a viable candidate for all of the county and state band competitions.

After graduation at Fair Lawn High School the young musician furthered his studies at Montclair State College where he pursued a degree in music education. While at Montclair he became the principal trumpet in the concert band as well as the lead player in the college stage band and was already doing professional work in New York City and was teaching at the Academy of Music in Upper Montclair N.J. After receiving his bachelors degree from Montclair Guzio became a freelance player doing short tours with various performers including The Tommy Dorsey Band under the direction of Warren Covington.

After doing a short run of a broadway show called 'Purlie' Guzio decided to go back to school and was accepted as a trumpet major in the graduate program at Manhattan School of music. While at Manhattan Guzio turned his attention to learning the classical repertoire and studied from Mel Brioiles and William Vachiano. In his second year at Manhattan he became the principal trumpet player in the Manhattan Orchestra while still making a living doing commercial and jazz gigs in the New York area.

After receiving a Masters Degree in performance from Manhattan Guzio left the New York scene and accepted a full time position at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. At Berklee Guzio taught ear training, private studies and a jazz work shop. At this time he organized a jazz sextet which played at various venues in Boston. After 3 years in Boston Guzio decided it was time to come back to New York for good where he continues to be a free lance player and teacher.
